Raymond Residence: "Sis"

Project Location: Belmont, Massachusetts
Set just outside of Boston, this site had been the location of an innovative solar-powered home designed by the famous modernist architect, Eleanor Raymond. The American Institute of Architects ran an international competition entitled “Listening to the Past, Looking to the Future: A House for Today.” In this unique sketch competition, submitters were asked to explore the legacy of modernist design, through a concept design problem. The new house had to assume the identical program, which Eleanor’s sister, Rachel Raymond, had requested back in 1931, not exceeding 2,500 s.f. The challenge was to create a contemporary interpretation of this historically relevant house using sustainable strategies and renewable energy sources.
